The records for those who served in the Union during the Civil War are mainly located in Washington DC at the National Archives. Almost 3 million men and women served.

There are several different records in the National Archives useful in researching your Civil War Ancestors.

Compiled Service Records were created by assembliing various records on each veteran.  The Old War Department created the CSR’s to preserve the original documents which were being destroyed due to their constant handling fulfilling requests to verify veterans service.  The records are on cards and consist of muster roll information, payroll records, strength returns and other misc. records.   This information was gathered by clerks between about 1900 and 1930.  Every time an identifiable name was found, a new card was created. Each time additional information on that Veteran was found it was added to the card.
